Focus areas

International_Sustainability_NTF INNOVATIVE FINANCE

Closing the funding gap

Innovative finance focuses on developing financial strategies to sustainably manage and preserve natural resources. It seeks to secure continuous funding and unlock extra resources for long-term environmental stewardship. Mechanisms like conservation finance and blended finance, harness economic incentives to support conservation efforts and generate financial benefits encouraging community participation and ownership.

International_Sustainability_NTF POLICY & ACCOUNTABILITY

Empowering local communities

Policy & accountability highlights the role of local communities in solving environmental issues by promoting science-based policies, strategic litigation, and robust accountability mechanisms. It acknowledges the critical importance of insights and experiences from these communities in developing effective and equitable policies that protect the environment and facilitate a socially just transition.

International_Sustainability_NTF ECOSYSTEM HEALTH

Protecting biodiverse ecosystems

Ecosystem health supports the '30x30' targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which aims to protect and manage 30% of the world's terrestrial, freshwater, and marine areas by 2030. Currently, only about 17% of land and 8% of marine areas are protected. This effort is crucial for combating biodiversity loss and climate change, ensuring the preservation of natural systems essential for human well-being and all life on earth.

Background

The Nature Transformation Fund is building on the success of Klarna and Milkywire’s combined work with Give On, over the past three years, supporting impactful projects mitigating climate change and the loss of biodiversity.  The Nature Transformation Fund is a continuation of the Give One effort, opening up the Fund to any company looking to support transformative environmental change. The Fund offers companies a simple way to contribute directly to on-the-ground projects without the overhead of learning how to do so effectively.

Over the past three years, Klarna has committed $16+ million and supported 53 environmental initiatives, contributing to several of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, including climate action, life below water, and life on land.

Some results

The projects that we, along with others, have supported since 2021 have achieved some impressive results:

700,000ha

of forest in the upper Amazon with enhanced protection against illegal extraction, thanks to Amazon Frontlines efforts to help to indigenous guards to detect and document threats to their territories.

+14%

Grey Crowned Cranes sighted by RWCA in 2023 compared to 2022 in Rwanda, indicating that the community-led efforts to protect their habitat is having an effect.

195ha

of wildflower-rich grassland and habitats created by Buglife across the U.K. to fight pollinator decline, benefiting bees, butterflies, moths, flies, hoverflies, beetles, wasps, ants as well as a range of other wildlife.

4,9m

saplings of native trees planted across 10 countries and 3 continents. The majority of these trees have been planted in the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration Flagship and 2023 Earthshot prize winning initiative Accion Andina.
